This initiative focuses on the modernisation of three football grounds in San Ġwann, Ħal Kirkop, and Santa Luċija. The grounds at Ħal Kirkop and Santa Luċija are situated at the primary school and secondary of the respective localities. The ground at San Ġwann is adjacent to the primary school.
These football grounds form an important space for the community, especially for young people and students at the schools, while playing a central role in improving the accessibility and overall quality of sports facilities in these localities.
New synthetic turf will be installed at all three grounds, while at San Ġwann we will also replace the existing perimeter fencing.
The total contractual value of the San Ġwann project amounts to €164,805 (exclusive of VAT). The other grounds are still at public procurement stage and the total investment will be determined when this process is closed.
This major initiative forms part of a broader programme to upgrade sports facilities managed by FTS. In 2025 alone, FTS has invested approximately €1,341,535 in sports facilities across various schools.
Further projects are planned in the coming months, including the installation of new synthetic turf at Fgura Primary School and Ħad-Dingli Secondary School. The former also includes the construction of a new headquarters for Fgura Scout Group and the construction of a new fence around the whole ground. The latter includes the installation of a motorised retractable canopy above the whole ground so that the space may be used all year round, including during inclement weather. The canopy was installed in 2025. Jointly, these two projects are being done with an investment of approximately €2 million.
Another major investment in sports facilities within educational institutions is being done at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School in Naxxar. Here FTS is constructing an 11-a-side football ground, complete with an underground car park for approximately 500 vehicles, a spectators’ stand, a gymnasium, sanitary facilities, showers and changing rooms. This project also includes the pedestrianisation of part of the educational campus. The football ground and its facilities are estimated to cost approximately €19 million, while the underground car park and pedestrianisation project are estimated to cost approximately €8 million.
