The Minister for Education and Sport, Byron Camilleri, and the Minister for EU Funds, Social Dialogue, and Consumer Protection, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, visited works at Naxxar Primary School which is being re-constructed from scratch by FTS.

The first phase of the project involved the demolition of the old school building, with the exception of three facades which will be integrated into the new school due to their architectural characteristics. The old school was built after the War. The second stage of the project consisted of the excavation of the site. This was done in the first half of 2026. Following that, construction works on the foundations of the school commenced in the summer.

While the old school was spread over two floors, the new building will be on five floors – two floors at basement level, which will house a multipurpose hall, and three above street level. Since the old facades are being retained, the additional floor will have a design that respects these facades to have a more unified visual.

The new school will have a total of 46 classrooms, including 20 classrooms for kindergarten and will be able to accommodate approximately 1,000 children.

Minister Byron Camilleri said that this project is part of the ongoing effort to ensure that investment in educational infrastructure translates into a high-quality learning environment – one that addresses students’ diverse needs and provides them with greater opportunities to develop their skills and potential.

Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti said that education is a fundamental pillar of our country’s economic and social development, and therefore, through national and European funds, the Government is investing heavily in this important sector by rebuilding the Naxxar Primary School, ensuring students have a better environment that will ultimately support their academic development.

The Ministers were accompanied by the FTS leadership together with the professionals working on the project.

The project is estimated to cost approximately €22 million and is being co-funded by the European Union. The EU funds project title is: ‘ERDF.03.280 Enhancing educational facilities in Naxxar through the construction and setting up of a new primary school’.
