This project involved the construction of a new Primary School at Victoria, Gozo, which replaced the old one which was about 160 years old. The new school was built at the existing educational campus in Victoria. The Victoria campus in Gozo is the only one of its kind in our country since it includes a childcare centre, a kindergarten, a primary school, a middle school, a secondary school, as well as the Sixth Form.
The new Primary School has 16 classrooms for years of primary education and 10 classrooms for kindergarten. The school also has classrooms for specific subjects, including science, information technology and the arts. The primary school and the kindergarten together are able to accommodate about 650 children. In the new building there is also a childcare centre and several sports facilities. The size of the school is approximately 8,000 square meters, with 3,000 of them for sports and recreational activities.
As part of this project, the Middle School was extended and fully refurbished.
Excavation works on the site began in April 2020 and construction started in November of the same year. Construction works were completed in June 2023, with mechanical and electrical works, including the installation of various electricity, water, air-conditioning, and IT services being completed in September 2024.
Excavation and construction works were carried out under the supervision of archaeologists from the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage as archaeological remains were found on site. To properly preserve the archaeological remains, an archaeological interpretation centre was built within the school building.
This project was done with an investment of approximately €18 million. The Middle School opened its doors to students in September 2023, while the Primary School and childcare centre opened their doors in September 2024.
