This project involves the rebuilding of Naxxar primary school, which forms part of Maria Regina College.  It will have a total of 46 classrooms, including 20 classrooms for kindergarten.

The school will also include a number of classrooms for specific subjects such as art, music, drama, as well as industrial kitchen.  The school will also have sports facilities, as well as recreational spaces, a multi-sensory room, and a multipurpose hall.  The school will also have a library which can be open to the community after school hours.

The circulation spaces that lead you from one place to another are designed in such a way as to create spaces where students can spend recreational time or otherwise be used by educators for more informal learning.  In this way we are maximizing the use of every space in the school.  On the roof we will create a space for green fingers where students can have direct experience on the care of trees and plants.

The first phase of the project will include the construction work on the school building.  At this stage we will be demolishing the existing building while keeping the current facade of the school due to its characteristics.  While the old school was spread over two floors, the new building will be on five floors (two floors underground for ancillary purposes and three above street level).  Since the existing facade will be maintained, the new floor will have a design that respects the existing facade to have a more unified visual.  The visual of vertical elements will be maintained, but the new part will be built with contemporary materials such as hardstone and cladding so that we can distinguish the new from the old.

After the construction phase we will be working on services such as the installation of electricity, water and drainage, internet connectivity, alarms, and security cameras, as well as other necessary services, including those related to security in case of fire.

After the installation of these services, we move to the installation of the apertures, tile laying, sanitary facilities, plastering, painting of walls, and the installation of soffits.  The school will also be equipped with new furniture that further encourages inclusion in learning.  In the building we will also be introducing energy efficient measures, including the installation of photovoltaic panels.

The new school will be spread over approximately 13,000 square meters on five levels, with 3,000 square meters of them dedicated to activities that take place in open spaces.

The new school will be able to accommodate around 1,000 children, both in the primary school and in the kindergarten.

The project is estimated to cost approximately €21.5 million.

This project is being co-funded by the European Union. ERDF.03.280 Enhancing educational facilities in Naxxar through the construction and setting up of a new primary school.
